Lagos Pays N3 Billion to Property Owners for New Roads
Getting a road built in Lagos usually means some buildings have to make way. But this time, the state government is making sure property owners do not lose out.
On Monday, the Lagos State Government handed out a massive N3 billion to 331 property owners whose lands and buildings were taken over to make space for new road projects.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu personally presented the compensation cheques at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium inside the State Secretariat in Alausa, Ikeja.
Why the Payout Matters
During the event, Governor Sanwo-Olu explained that while the law (specifically the Land Use Act) gives the government the power to take over private land for public use, it is only fair and right to pay people back promptly.
He put it simply: paying compensation is not a favor or act of charity—it is pure justice. He noted that every building marked for demolition represents someone's hard work, family investment, and future security, which is why development must have a "human face."
How the Process Worked
To make sure the right people got paid and to stop fraudsters, the government put every single claim through a strict screening process. This involved:
- Physical checking and counting of the properties (enumeration).
- Proper valuation carried out by certified estate surveyors.
- Careful checks of all land titles and ownership documents.
What Comes Next?
The cleared lands will now be used to construct vital roads designed to cut down traffic, shorten travel hours, make trading easier, and boost the Lagos economy.
For those whose names are not yet on the current list, Governor Sanwo-Olu offered some reassurance: as long as your documents are genuine, you will eventually get your money, as the state screening is designed to weed out fake claimants. Finally, he advised all the beneficiaries to put their new funds into smart, productive investments rather than spending it all at once.
